The Pantone Color Institute just released their official 2021 Color of the Year! For the first year ever, they’ve selected a pair of colors rather than a single color. According to their choices, though the world may seem gray, the light can still shine through. What do we mean? Well, they chose Ultimate Gray and Illuminating for their colors. In the words of their Executive Director, Leatrice Eiseman:
“The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.”
We couldn’t have said it any better.
Why Is Pantone COY Important?
So why do we care what colors Pantone chooses? The people at Pantone are color experts. They’re the ones who name and assign numbers to the many color codes available in the digital world for creating and designing across many industries. (And as far as Adam Judge is concerned, everything needs design.) Pantone has been an authority on colors since the 1960s. They know what they're talking about, so we trust them to select the right color combo for the new year.
How You Can Use the COY In Your Workspace
It’s our job at CBI Group to stay on top of the trends and help you plan the absolute best space possible. We’ve been in business for 37 years, so we have connections to the best manufacturers around.
When it comes to styling your space using the 2021 COY, our biggest reminder is this:
Illuminating accents Ultimate Gray.
What do we mean by that? In our professional opinion, this color combo works best in any office when the bright yellow is used to accent the neutral gray, rather than the other way around. Illuminating draws the eye, and Ultimate Gray keeps it from becoming overwhelming.

We also love the palette builder Pantone released to help you get an idea of which other colors will look best in your space with Illuminating and Ultimate Gray. And as always, our Idea Gallery is chock full of office space inspo from our past projects and manufacturers.
